Mandela Day

Mandela Day 2017 was celebrated in a manner that would have warmed tata Nelson Mandela’s heart as this year’s beneficiaries were children from the Ntweka community in Ward 5. A crèche built by the uMgungundlovu District Municipality was handed over to our municipality to run and manage.

The district municipality partnered with the National Development Agency (NDA) and Divine Life Society to bring this infrastructure to life.

The project will receive ongoing support and training for the workers and board members. Through funding from the NDA, teachers will be upskilled in early childhood skills at National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level 4 and board members will be trained in governance, finance, fundraising and conflict management.

The vision is to make the crèche self-sufficient and develop excellence. The centre is currently schooling 22 children from as young as three years.

The childhood centre was officially opened by district mayor Thobekile Maphumulo and Mkhambathini mayor Eric Ngcongo who both appealed to community members to ensure that this valuable asset does not get vandalised or misused, as doing so will ultimately affect the children who need an education.
